Five Finger Kudos
In other Easter-Fletcher related news, Nathan volunteered to visit the underprivileged children of Sweden and flew out to spend a day with them as the Easter Bunny.
Though there was a severe language barrier, and a few children were frightened to death of the masked marauder, most of the Scandinavian scamps welcomed Nathan with open arms as he passed out Easter baskets full of goodies and treats. Later that day, the villagers honored Nathan by throwing a traditional smorgasbord with exotic reindeer meats and herring.
A good time was had by all!
That Nathan. Always with a heart of gold.
The year was 1989. A time when the PSAA was the reigning US tour for American surfers, and when volleyball ads took up a lot of ad space in surf magazines. When people rolled up their Gotcha t-shirt sleeves to go along with their tight corduroy Op shorts. Ah, what an era. It was also during the end of this decade when an 18-year-old kid by the name of Christian Fletcher was dropping jaws and taking down some big names. Out with the old, in with the new? Christian was at the forefront, if not the pioneer, of a movement that still has many people trying to catch up and understand. Check out the latest issue of The Surfer’s Journal. Writer Ben Marcus picks some brains and gets some interesting commentary on some of the people who were there to witness Christian’s aerial assault. Did these guys realize that history was being made?
A huge woo-hoo, atta boy, and F#CK YEAAAAAH goes out to Astrodeck team rider and Wunderkind John John Florence. His latest victory at this year’s Volcom Pipeline Pro makes it three years in a row that the 20-year-old Oahu native has been able to do repeat business at the prestigious event. We’re so stoked and proud of John John. And this is just the start of things yet to come!
Everything you’ve heard about John John Florence is true. Everything.
He IS that good. He IS that talented. And he IS that surfing phenom who someday will be World Champ.
Need some more convincing? Watch the clip. John John makes his presence known and he makes his statement loud and clear. How sick is this kid? No. Seriously. If there ever was a true definition for the word Wunderkind, John John Florence would be it.
“Departure Delayed” also features guest appearances by Nathan Florence, Ivan Florence, Kiron Jabour, and Greyson Fletcher, so check it out!
To attack fearlessly and recklessly, that’s what the Japanese word “Banzai” means. And judging from Greyson’s recent assault at the Banzai Skate Park, the boy was all about being a Kamikaze daredevil.
Check out Greyson in a couple of links. It’s good for your soul.
But Greyson has a hot new chick in his life.
Nathan was invited to surf in this season’s Eddie Aikau Invitational. Not everyone can just register their name and expect to participate in this contest. To be included in the Eddie is like some rite of passage for big wave riders. It is no easy feat, and is actually quite a big deal. So we’re more than proud and stoked to announce Nathan’s invite, and want to congratulate him as well as the other elite invitees who have the honor to surf and compete in such a prestigious event. Go guys, go! Eddie would have wanted it that way!
